Check Fitted-Sheet Pocket Depth as Well as Mattress Length

A fitted sheet matches the bed’s advertised size but keeps releasing at one corner. Length and width may be correct while the pocket is too shallow for the mattress and the layers on top. A bed-size name does not describe every dimension involved in the fit.

Measure the bed as it is used

Record mattress length, width and depth. Include a topper or other layer that sits inside the fitted sheet. Measure at a representative edge without compressing a soft surface more than necessary.

Write down the units and keep the measurements together. Bed-size names vary between markets and brands. Comparing the actual product dimensions is more dependable than assuming a familiar label means the same thing everywhere.

Read what the pocket figure means

A retailer may state a sheet’s pocket depth or a maximum suitable mattress depth. Those descriptions are not automatically interchangeable. Check the manufacturer’s sizing guide and ask when the wording is unclear.

In a fictional example, a mattress is 25 cm deep and a topper adds 6 cm. The fitted sheet needs to accommodate the combined arrangement rather than the mattress alone. Do not assume a sheet advertised with a 25 cm pocket will fit simply because the mattress without its topper has that depth.

Check the whole fit before settling in

Follow the product’s orientation guidance, if provided, and fit all corners without excessive force. Look for uneven pulling, an edge that cannot sit beneath the mattress or large loose folds. A deeper pocket is not automatically better if it leaves the sheet poorly fitted to a shallower bed.

Consider the fabric’s stated care instructions and any manufacturer information about shrinkage or prewashing. Do not buy a deliberately oversized sheet on the assumption that a hot wash will shrink it to a predictable size.

Keep the packaging and measurements until you have checked the retailer’s return conditions and the fit. When a corner repeatedly slips, note which dimension or layer changed. That observation is more useful for a replacement purchase than simply moving to another product carrying the same bed-size name.
